Mowing your lawn correctly, at the right time should leave your turf thick and healthy. A healthy turf grows well enough to crowd out weeds, limiting the need for additional weed control measure. Conversely, incorrectly mowing your lawn can leave it susceptible to drought and possibly even damaged or burned.

Mowing Your Lawn: 4 Tips and Tricks

Do not cut your lawn too short.

Mowing your lawn too short is referred to as scalping. Scalping your lawn can expose it to too much sun, leaving it burned. Too much sun reaching the soil also creates an opportunity for weed seeds to grow, which will increase weed activity in your lawn.

Cutting your grass too short also leaves your lawn vulnerable to drought, diseases and fungus.

Lawn mower height is adjustable and this is an important factor that should not be ignored. The height of your mower should be adjusted depending on the type of grass variety that you have in your lawn.

Warm season turfgrasses like Zoysia and Bermuda should be mowed between 2.5″-3.0″. Cool season grasses like Fescue on the other hand, should be mowed no lower than 3.5″-4.0″.

Many homeowners have cool season grass in one part of their lawn and warm season in another. Adjusting the mower height per section will ensure that all areas stay healthy and look good.

Cut your lawn at the right time.

The right time to mow your lawn does not so much refer to the time of day as it does to the optimal time to mow after the last cutting.

A good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that approximately 1/3″ of the grass leaf should be cut off during each more. Cutting off more than a 1/3″ of the blade will result in scalping, as mentioned above.

Mulch your lawn clippings.

Letting your grass clippings circulate back into the lawn after cutting is ideal for lawn health. Many people bag their grass clippings, but in fact, mulched clippings actually act as a natural fertilizer for your lawn. Not to mention it can save you time and money!

Switch up your mowing patterns.

We all love to have nice mowing lines in our lawn. Make sure that when you mow, you are mowing in a different direction or pattern each time. This will help prevent soil compaction and a rutty lawn.
